Banyan, Birds and Belle Surf

With Belle Surf’s new location now open in sunny Lahaina Town, we are having a great time settling in to the neighborhood. Having always loved this vibrant part of the island, it is awesome to be near the harbor, charming plantation-style architecture, and right along the cheerful hustle and bustle of Front Street. The vacation vibes are strong, even at work! We are so lucky to be nestled in with some wonderful local shops, artists, and people. But quickly becoming one of our favorite nearby spots is Banyan Tree Park.

Coming in first place as not only the oldest, but also largest banyan tree in the country, this beauty was planted in 1873 and now stands over 60 feet tall! The unique thing about this particular species is their ability to grow not only vertically but horizontally as well. Aerial roots spider their way down from the branches, burrow new homes for themselves in the soil beneath, and eventually become thick trunks of their own. Our friend in Lahaina has 16 trunks and spans over an entire city block, famously providing refuge from the sun for fatigued tourists, local musicians, lovers, and friends.

While clean air and expansive shade are both wonderful perks, our favorite part of having close proximity to the tree is the myna birds. Roosting in the canopy as the sun sets and waking just before sunrise, the sound of their collective melodic chirps is overwhelming – in the best way. We love to grab a coffee to go and head across the street, perch on a bench as the last sunbeams of the day shine through the branches, and let all worries float away with the songs of a thousand birds. This is definitely a must-try on the west side.

Belle Surf also has a perfect little bar setup on the lanai that provides a gorgeous view of the banyan. Getting up early enough to start your day with a cozy latte – slowly waking up with the mynas as the stars still twinkle above is pure magic. We feel so lucky to be in Maui, and we hope you bring us along on your next trip to the tree in your coffee cup!
